INTRODUCTION
Leadership Washington County has been identifying and preparing future leaders through its Leadership
Washington County program since 1998. Leadership Washington County is a program designed to identify,
educate and motivate emerging leaders to ultimately involve them actively in community.
OPPORTUNITY
Leadership Washington County is a year-long intensive program that develops effective leaders who are able to
help improve our communities. Through 10, day-long sessions, participants are guided to a better
understanding of themselves, their community, the basic skills necessary to take on a leadership role and have
a positive impact in Washington County.
From the kick-off retreat to the graduation ceremony, participants interact and build teamwork skills with
classmates from various organizations and background. Sessions are typically held the 3rd Tuesday of the
month and address topics such as board membership, business and economic development, justice system
education system, quality of life, leadership in a changing society, health and human services, and government
and politics.
After graduation, Leadership Washington County provides participants with opportunities for board membership
in order to stay actively involved in the community.
EXPECTATIONS
The purpose of Leadership Washington County is to introduce and orient new leaders to our community and
identify individuals who have displayed a strong tendency toward civic involvement and assist them in increasing
their potential to become community leaders. Emanating from a diversity of backgrounds and personal
experiences, each participant brings a uniquely vital viewpoint from which all class members benefit.
Just as an established leader in the community would do, participants are expected to show their commitment by
attending all classes and events. Each class member must assume an active role in each session through
discussions, homework, completion of a class project and taking part in field trips.
It is only through the dedication to the program that participants receive the full experience of Leadership
Washington County.
Class members are chosen from a wide range of employment backgrounds and organizations, live in a variety of
areas and vary in age. Anyone willing to make a commitment to the program is eligible. Each participant and
their employer must agree to full participation in all sessions and activities of the program.
Program tuition is $725. The participant’s employer or sponsoring organization is asked to invest $575 of this
amount. The remaining $150 must be paid by the participant to demonstrate a personal commitment to the
program. Payment must be made prior to the orientation session and is non-refundable.
MISSION STATEMENT
Leadership Washington County is dedicated to becoming the premier organization in the development of
community leaders in Washington County. We will consistently ensure that a diverse group of program
participants gain an in-depth understanding of the broad spectrum of issues affecting Washington County. In
doing this, we hope to foster leadership, commitment and active participation in community affairs by
encouraging participants to assume leadership roles in the community.
